Emergency Fund Runway Calculator

Calculate how many months your current savings could cover the essential monthly expenses you enter.

Use this to model how long current savings could cover a defined monthly shortfall if income changed or stopped.

How this tool works

Monthly shortfall = essential monthly expenses − continuing monthly income. Estimated runway = emergency savings ÷ monthly shortfall. If continuing income already covers the essential expenses you enter, the tool reports that there is no shortfall in that scenario.

How to read the result

The result is scenario arithmetic, not a recommendation for how many months of savings you should hold. Real emergencies can change expenses, income, access to funds, insurance costs, taxes or debt obligations.

Example

With 12,000 in savings, 3,000 of essential monthly expenses and 1,000 of continuing income, the monthly gap is 2,000 and the estimated runway is six months under those assumptions.

What to watch for

  • Use essential expenses for the scenario you are modelling, not every optional expense.
  • Do not assume expenses stay perfectly constant over a long disruption. Test more than one scenario if uncertainty is high.

Limitations

Use the result as a planning aid. ZeroStress tools do not diagnose stress, anxiety, burnout or any other medical or psychological condition. Financial tools provide arithmetic and scenario comparisons rather than personal financial advice. Important medical, legal, financial, safety or other professional decisions require appropriate professional advice.

Frequently asked questions

Is six months the right emergency fund for everyone?

ZeroStress does not prescribe a universal target. The calculator only tells you how long the savings and expense assumptions you enter would last.

Should investments count as emergency savings?

That depends on liquidity, risk, tax and personal circumstances. The tool does not decide which assets belong in an emergency fund.
